AN INTERVIEW: KOVACS

(Türkçe okumak için buraya tıklayın)

Sharon Kovacs, Dutch singer, is very much loved in Turkey. She performed many times in Istanbul and all of her gigs are sold out.

She was going to perform once more on 21st of May at Zorlu PSM but unfortunately due to Coronavirus measures, the concert is canceled.

We had an amazing chat last Wednesday on Skype, and talked about current situation and her future plans.

Enjoy!

First of all, about the crazy situation we are in. How are your quarantine days passing?

Yeah, my days are very empty. You know no travelling, staying home all the time. So it's a little bit boring now.

Did you get used to be at home?

It's ok but i like to travel, i like to go everywhere and perform. But they are all not possible now.

You're living in Eindhoven, right? What are the pros and cons to live there as an artist?

I dont know.. We have a very strong social structure. As a musician it's easy to live here because we have so many subsidies and funds. But its a small city you know, there are few places to perform. Sometimes it's boring but it's ok. We have an airport and its cheaper to travel from here, so that's a plus.

When we check the spotify's listeners list,we see that Istanbul is in the first place and other Turkish cities such as Ankara and İzmir are also in the first five. What can you say about this, why do you think you are so much loved in Turkey?

I dont know i think my music is very emotional as Turkish music. Maybe thats why. Also i sometimes use instruments that Turkish people can like, such as Turkish guitar. (saz)

You were going to be in Istanbul once again on 21st of May at Zorlu PSM venue. Did you reschedule it?

Probably next year. Because it was a part of the festival. But hopefully i can come earlier but there's nothing planned but we are working on the new dates.

You performed many times in Istanbul before. Do you know anything about Turkish music scene? Some anatolian pscychedelic rock is very popular recently.

Yes i know and i have a Turkish playlist indeed. I performed with Ufuk Baydemir on my last concert. I think he makes rock music as well. I listen Barış Manço and Cem Karaca.

So you like "oldies but goldies" :)

Yeah

And which bands/musicians are you listening on these days in general?

I like old singers.. Patti Smith, Ella Fitzgerald. Also i really like Benjamin Clementine. I am also currently writing my new album. I am trying not to distract too much from my own bubble, if you understand what i mean.

First album "Shades of Black" released in 2015 and the last one "Cheap Smell" in 2018. How do you think your musical sense evolved or changed among those 3 years?

I think musically my second album, i wanted something new. I wanted to go away from somewhere i was. And now for this album,  i feel like i'm more comfortable with both sides of myself. And i want to go deeper. I think its gonna be more personal.

It will be more isolated i guess :)

Yeah definitely.

Is there anything that you are so passionate about except music?

I like gardening.

Gardening? So you like plants?

Flowers, trees and vegetables. They make me very happy.

What are your plans for the near future? What's on your agenda?

Well, i dont know. Its still difficult to see the future. So i keep on writing my music for now. At the moment when the world is opening up again, probably next year release an album.

I think we will have to wait until next year for the life to return normal.

Yeah, so it makes no sense to bring a new album now. You know, sit at home!

I want to play a fun game as my last question. Can you say the first words that comes to your mind, when you hear the following words?

Music fun
Color blue
Marriage no
Animal dog
Book animal farm
Friendship you need it
Movie lankin
Food         fries
Politics no
Love borders

Thank you very much, it was really amazing to chat with you.

Thank you for your time, and good luck.
