AN INTERVIEW: GARDENS OF CAPRI

(Türkçe okumak için buraya tıklayın)

It was 4th of August when we first mentioned about Gardens of Capri here.

The duo, consisting of Julian Scharpf and Amy Elizabeth Jarrett, released their last single "Peachy" last October.

We had an opportunity to chat with Julian Scharpf about the band and their future plans.

Enjoy!

Hello, thanks for accepting replying our questions. First of all, can you please tell us how you met with Amy Elizabeth and decided to make music together?

Amy and I already met in 2005 when we were both traveling through Australia. That’s when our friendship started. Starting in 2012, we were singing together in different projects as well as playing cover music as a duo. But in 2018 we decided to join our voices for Gardens of Capri and perform our original songs together as well.

What's the story behind the band's name?

When we were thinking about a name, the name Capri was our favorite at first, just because we liked the sound of it and because we love Italy in general. But during that time I (Julian) was reading the book The Secret History by Donna Tartt and in it she was describing how the Roman emperor Tiberius was always living a very controlled life, trying to be loved by his people but never succeeded. He never broke out of his controlled manner and this is why he eventually went to the Gardens of Capri, turned crazy and died there. We found this to be very inspirational, because we believe all of us constantly struggle to break out of our comfort zones and limitations and long to just give in to a state ecstasy sometimes, let the world be the world, feel no judgement and simply be free.

You released your last single "peachy" last month. How are the reactions you receive? Can you tell us about the song writing and recording process?

The reactions have been very positive. It is only the second song we released after Let Go, but we are already getting a lot of encouraging feedback. We write and produce the songs in the south of Germany at the Lake of Constance. It’s a beautiful place but also home to our producer Leander Bauer, who is a big part of the production and writing process. All the songs have been written and produced in his studio so far.

How long should we wait for an album or new songs?

We will release our 3rd song within the next 2 months and are currently working on the music video. In the spring we plan to release an EP and start writing on an album. Which we plan on releasing in the fall of 2020.

Do you know anything about Istanbul or Turkish music scene?

I actually only know the venue Mecra in Istanbul, because the German band AnnenMayKantereit played a show there before. Apart from that I have to admit I don’t know much about the current Turkish music scene. Unfortunately.

In a parallel universe where you are not making music, what do you think each of you would be doing for a living?

In a parallel universe, Julian would be a psychologist and Amy would be a set costumer.

If you had to make a mix tape that would describe your musical influences, what tracks would you include?

There is a Spotify playlist with all the songs that influenced us for this project.

Here are 3 examples:

Rumors by Fleetwood Mac
Lighten up by Parcels
On the Level by Mac DeMarco.

What are your plans for near future?

Our plan is to take 3 months and rent a house somewhere in France or Italy to write new songs and get enough material to put on an album. Also, as I said, we will continue to regularly release new songs and music videos. In the spring of 2020 we also plan on playing a small tour through Germany. Hopefully one day we will be able to come to Turkey, as well.

Which bands / musicians do you listen nowadays?

Right now we listen to a lot of Anderson Paak, Nicolas Jaar, Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean, Khruangbin, Bon Iver ,Taylor Swift but also still Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles and Little River Band.

Is there anything that you are passionate about except music?

Amy is really passionate about slow fashion and upcycling used clothing into new products. She actually studied fashion design in California and has an online store.

We are really passionate about sustainable living and figuring out our role of living responsibly in a world that just seems to get crazier by the minute.

Thank you very much, is there anything that you want to add?

Thanks to you as well, we really appreciate the opportunity and hope to see you at a show in Turkey one day. If you have a suggestion of where to play, let us know ;)
