AN INTERVIEW: KID FRANCESCOLI

Mathieu Hocine's electronic pop project Kid Francescoli is always trying new sounds on his music.

We had interviewed with Mathieu in 2017 before his first Istanbul concert and once more, in the era of Coronavirus, we had another chance to chat with him.

Kid Francescoli, whose concert was scheduled to take place at Zorlu PSM on 23 April and has been canceled due to the virus, talked about his future agenda, new album and much more on our interview.

Enjoy!

Hi, thanks for accepting us. Our last interview with you was in January 2017 before your Istanbul concert that year. And it was absolutely a great performance! How are you since then?

Hi, I’m fine thank you. The last album lovers has just been released, and the tour was beginning but we had to stop it after a couple of shows because of the virus. But the shows were great so I’m just waiting patiently for it to start again, making music at home during this time.

Do you remember anything from that concert, the audience or the city?

That gig in Istanbul was so great, and it has a particular place in my mind. It was almost canceled because of the terrorist attacks of new year’s eve two weeks before (sorry to bring back bad memories), but we insist to do it and we were right, the people there were so happy about it and it all made the show a special one. Plus it was the first show of the tour and I knew that beginning the tour there and in that conditions would bless it, which it did considering that we’ve almost tour for two years all around the world then.

When we check the Spotify, we see that Istanbul is the second city that you are most listened to. Why do you think you are that much loved in here?

I really don’t have any explanation about it, maybe it comes from the mutual love, you know I love the city so much so I guess it worked like a boomerang effect

Your last album "Lovers" released at the end of January. How are the first reactions you receive? Can you tell us the writing and recording process?

Some of the reactions are a little confused because there are new voices on it, but I was prepared to this because I knew trying something different brings you that kind of thing. My biggest pride is when people first react a little disappointed about it then write you again a couple of weeks later saying that they finally love it.

About the writing, I’ve tried new things musically (especially on the beats and influences) and did my best to keep an open mind to collaborations, and I’m really happy about the result because it sums the feeling that I had each time I was back home in marseille from a far gig: the warmth of the sun, the beauty of the light, the peacefulness of the sea, that’s what I wanted to transcribe in music on this album.

Is there any specific venue or city that you like to play most?

Not really, I just like touring in general, I want to play everywhere.

If you had to make a mix tape that would describe your musical influences, what tracks would you include?

Some from Frank Ocean, lana Del Rey, Chromatics, some 80s slow hits (everybody’s got to learn sometimes, nothing compares 2U, careless whisper), some french (gainsbourg, tellier) and soundtracks, especially the ennio morrcione’s themes.

What is the most insane thing your fans did to get your attention?

Tattooing our lyrics.

Which bands/musicians are you listening on these days?

Caribou, sega bodega, daniel lopatin, andrea laslo de simone and peter gabriel (to be exact one per day the last five days)

Is there anything that you are so passionate about except music?

Definitely football, you know we have that great team here, OM, that won the champions league back in 93, and the atmosphere in the stadium is almost as crazy as in your country (no one beats turkey I know about that).

What are your plans for the near future? What's on your agenda?

I’m working on soundtracks for short films right now, and I’ve started to get things together for the next album.

Thank you very much, is there anything that you want to add?

I hope that this virus is gonna be beated soon so that we can all have a good time in istanbul !
