AN INTERVIEW: PAPOOZ

Tropical energy balls "Papooz" will perform their first gig in Istanbul at Salon on 14th October.

We had a great interview with French duo before their upcoming concert, can't wait to see them live on stage!

You can buy tickets here

Enjoy!

You name your music style as "tropical garage". How can you define that?

We used to… It’s mostly a joke we made when our first EP came out in 2015. «Tropical »  stands for our love of bossa nova and calypso music, « Garage » because we used to record our first songs with the apple software « garage band » directly with the computer mic. We have nothing to do with the actual Garage music scene.

You live in Paris. How is the music atmosphere there? What are the pros and cons for you to be in Paris?

Pretty smooth. Lots of concert halls and venues. Lots of bands. Everyone kinda knows each other. We don’t see any cons, it’s a pretty big city.

How did you decide to make music together?

We both wanted to learn how to play saxophone and ended up singing together instead.

How did you choose the name "Papooz"? What does it mean?

By smoking far too much « kiff » in the marrocan desert. It doesn’t really mean anything, except « baby cradle » in english (papoose). We just thought it had a nice « tribe » ring into it.

Your debut album "Green Juice" was released last year. How are the reactions you receive? Is there any new songs ahead?

Good! Both public and critics has been kind to us. We have a lot of new songs ready to be recorded this fall.

You will play at Salon on 14th October. It will be your first gig in Istanbul, how do you feel about this concert? Do you know anything about Istanbul or Turkish music scene?

First gig ever in Istanbul! We feel really exited about this. We don’t know anything about turkish music except for the Saz instrument.

Is there any song that you particularly like to play live?

The new ones we haven’t record yet.

Which bands / musicians do you listen recently?

Softhair, a pinch of Homeshake, some Lemon Twiggs, a few Anderson Paak, some early Mac Demarco, and the famous oldies classic: jj cale (the troubadour album) and Frank Sinatra. We passed half the summer together listening to Swinging love songs. Frank sounds really special to us.

What are your plans for the near future?

Record our LP2.

Thanks for answers. Is there anything you want to add for your awaiting Turkish listeners?

We can’t wait to finally meet you and try those mussels stuff with rice... x
