AN INTERVIEW WITH TAMINO

We had an amazing chat with Egyptian-Belgian musician Tamino, who will be at Salon IKSV for his first Istanbul concert on 25th May.

Enjoy!

We really are excited to see you here. It will be your first concert in Istanbul. Have you ever been here before? Do you know anything about the city?

I’m excited as well! I’ve never been in Istanbul although I’ve always wanted to go. Very happy that it’s finally happening. I’ve heard that it’s very beautiful and a city of great history.

Your debut EP, including 5 great songs, released last year. Can you tell us the process? Your inspirations, writing and producing era and reactions that you receive.

When I was 19 I had written around 30 songs that I liked for my solo project and felt like I wanted to record some of them. I contacted Tom Pintens with whom I recorded 13 of them. Afterwards I chose the ones that fitted together the best and that became the EP. I lived in Amsterdam back then (I studied music at the conservatory there) and I think being on my own in a new city for the first time influenced a lot of the songs I wrote back then.

The reactions were amazing. I never saw any of this coming and am very grateful every day to the people who support me and like my music.

When will we hear new songs and get the full album?

Soon! Working very hard on new music.

Do you play any covers at the concerts?

I usually don’t like to play covers but I’ve done the Arctic Monkeys’ ‘I bet you look good on the dance floor’ because I really like the song and thought it’d be cool to make an own version of it.

Will we able to hear new songs at the concert? What is awaiting us on the stage?

I will definitely play new songs, as well as the old songs from the EP. I will bring my band as well (Drummer: Ruben Vanhoutte, and Keys: Vik Hardy) and the best sound guy in the world (PJ Maertens).

You live in Antwerp, right? What's the pros and cons of living in Belgium? How is the music scene there?

That’s right. I think the big advantage for an artist living in Belgium is that there’s a history of surrealist art and wayward artists which contributes to the way young, upcoming Belgian artists perceive art. I feel like the focus is less on commercial goals, causing the artists to truly create something meaningful. Of course, Belgium being a small country has its own disadvantages if you want to spread your art to other parts of the world…

How did you choose the name “Tamino"?

‘Tamino’ is my real name so it wasn’t much of a choice haha. My mother is a big fan of opera and Tamino is one of the main characters in Mozart’s: Die Zauberflöte. She chose the name when she was pregnant, while listening to a CD recording of the opera and hearing “Tamino!” coming out of the speakers.

Which bands / musicians do you listen recently?

Fka Twigs, Bob Dylan, Björk, Frank Ocean

What are your plans for the near future?

It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if I told you now right? :)

Can you please fill in the blanks :)

- World would be so BARREN without music.
- I would be A DOLPHIN if i wouldn’t be a singer.
- Sometimes i find myself singing while i ‘m SLEEPING
- I do READING to cheer up.

Thanks for answers. Is there anything you want to add for your awaiting Turkish listeners?

Can’t wait to visit you. It means so much to me that my music reaches people in Turkey. Thank you! See you soon!
