AN INTERVIEW: JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN

American musician, singer-songwriter and prdoucer Joan Wesser, known by her stage name Joan as Police Woman, will be in Istanbul once more on 22nd March, for her new album Damned Devotion's Europe tour. (find tickets here)

We had a great chat with her, about upcoming Istanbul concert, new album, near future plans and many more.

Enjoy!

Hi Joan, thanks for accepting our questions. First of all, we are so excited to see you again at Istanbul. You performed here in 2011, do you remember anything about the city or the gig?

Was it THAT long ago? It felt like last year! I love Istanbul. Every time I’ve been there, I want to stay longer. I always visit your outrageously gorgeous mosques, eat as many grilled mackerel sandwiches as I can and walk and walk until I can’t walk any longer. I remember breaking a guitar string and a skilled attendee changing it very quickly for me!

Your last album Damned Devotion is released on February. How are the first reactions you take? And how do you think did your music change since Real Life?

Folks have responded very well to the album. I am fortunate. Many people have said that this album reminds them of the feeling of Real Life. I still feel as if every song I write is my first. I’ve always tried to pare the songs down to their most necessary elements and that’s still true although I think I work with a broader rainbow of sound now.

You define this record as "darker and more pensive". What was the motivation or inspiration behind writing such darker songs?

I never stop writing songs- the songs on each of my records are usually simply the songs I’ve written since the last - so they represent the happenings of that period of my life. I lost both my fathers since the release of The Classic and losing such important people certainly sets up a level of seriousness and urgency.

One of my favourite songs from Damned Devotion is "The Silence". Can you tell the story of the song?

This song started as a comment on personal communication and grew into including communication on a larger scale. The refrain is “It’s the silence that’s dulling the blade”. We must stay sharp if we want to shape our lives the way we want. We must say what we feel so that others know they are not alone. I took audio of the women’s march on DC in Jan of 2017 and used the chant “My body my choice, her body her choice” in the song. The coming together of so many women and men to make their voices heard is a necessary step in making change happen.

You will be at Zorlu PSM on 22th March, how do you feel about that concert?

SO EXCITED! It’s our first of our 5 week European tour. Every single one of us can’t stop talking about it!

Which bands/musicians are you listening on these days? Any advice?

Nick Hakim, Moses Sumney, Benjamin Lazar Davis, Bridget Kearney

Is there anything that you are so passionate about except music?

I love my brother. I love NYC. I love being on the roof right now doing this interview on a beautiful warm sunny day.

What are you plans for the near future?

Touring! Working on another Covers record, working on another collaborative record with Benjamin Lazar Davis, about to do a podcast with Meshell Ndegeocello!

Can you please fill in the blanks :)

  - World would be so unlivable without music.
  - I would be unhappy if i wouldnt be a singer.
  - Sometimes i find myself singing while i ‘m riding my bicycle through NYC
  - play music, eat ice cream, talk to my friends to cheer up.
